English

Today, the quality and attractiveness of public spaces in cities have become one of the most important measures of urban development. In this context, streets, due to their characteristics in creating social interactions in the age of virtual communication and as multifunctional areas encompassing a wide range of activities, are of particular importance. Appropriate design of elements in high-traffic urban axes contributes to the vitality of public spaces. Therefore, this paper was conducted with the aim of analyzing and investigating the role of the Hashemieh pedestrian axis in Mashhad in enhancing the sense of vitality and happiness of citizens. This research is applied and was carried out using a descriptive-analytical research method. The population of District 9, based on the 2016 Population and Housing Census, is 329,562 individuals, and using Cochran's sample size formula, 390 questionnaires were administered and statistically analyzed with the help of SPSS software. The study examined aspects such as vivification, human scale, the presence of required land uses along the pedestrian axis, the captivating nature of the space, pleasantness, attractiveness, comfort, continuity, the proportion of the passage to the cultural habits of pedestrians, lighting, access to transit stations, sightlines, and the quality of sensory perception of pedestrians along the pedestrian passage. According to the conducted analyses, the aforementioned axis possesses suitable conditions as a pedestrian way; however, it is currently not at a desirable level. On the other hand, given the existing potentials of the Hashemieh pedestrian axis and the relationship between environmental design quality and vitality along this axis, suggestions and solutions have been proposed in line with the objectives of this paper.
